Group VIII metals in combination with the ligand dfepe (C2F5)2PCH2CH2P(C2F5)2 have some catalytic acceptor promoted alkane dehydrogenation properties. Previous attempts at developing the catalyst cis-(dfepe)2Ru(H)2 in a large amounts have been unsuccessful. The focus of this experiment was to create a ruthenium(II) fluoroalkyl phosphine hydride complex catalyst that can be utilized for the activation of hydrocarbons. A previous study from the Roddick group attempted to synthesize a fluoroalkyl phosphine ruthenium complex with the ability to dehydrogenate cyclic and non-cyclic alkane groups to formulate polyene complexes. Repeated attempts at resynthesizing Ru(dfepe)H2 resulted in two different compounds. Ru(dfepe)toluene and Ru(dfepe)(methylallyl)2. Both products lack catalytic ability and are relatively stable. Similar experimentations with group VIII metal osmium resulted in what is presumed to be the first Os(dfepe) complex: Os(dfepe)toluene.
