The Turner family of Salem, the subject of my research, represents the maritime history and prosperity present in Salem as well. As per my agreement with the House of the Seven Gables Museum, I was to construct a family, business, social and house history to be used as a source for the museum's tour guides. The time frame was to be from 1635 to 1790 with the focus being on Robert Turner's migration from England to Boston and the lives of his descendants involved with the House of the Seven Gables in Salem: John Turner, John Tumer(2) and John Turner(3). The three John Turners will be differentiated by the numbers in parentheses as shown. In addition, the question had to be answered: What did it mean to be a member of the Salem elite? One rose to and maintained such a status through the acquisition of wealth, marrying within one's rank, serving one's community and colony in a political and military capacity, attending the dominant church and mixing socially with one's peers. This thesis will help to illustrate each of these points.
