Abstract
This past fall and winter I participated in the Southwestern
Michigan Area Health Education Center Family Medicine Residency
Program at Borgess Hospital. I chose this for my Senior Individualized
Project for two reasons:
1. I plan on a career as a Family Physician
and see the medical profession as a group of highly skilled technicians
rather than as research scientists. Having previously
participated in two experimental laboratory projects, I did not see
any long term benefits from a third laboratory research oriented
project.
2. Even though I plan on a career as a
Family Physician, my actual exposure to Family Medicine has been
very limited. Thus, the opportunity to participate in the Residency
Program enabled me to observe the "daily routine" of a Family Physician.
This was important for me, because I did not want to enter
into a career with a misconception of what the job involved.
