Abstract
My Senior Independent Project was designed as a clinical
laboratory experience in preparation for a career in medical
technology. I spent ten weeks observing and performing two
types of radioimmunoassays, a relatively new clinical research
method which is coming into some use in larger hospital laboratories.
The lab in which I worked was that of Dr. Charles D.
Hawker, chief clinical chemist and director of research and
development for Laboratory Procedures, Inc., Division of.the
Upjohn Company, located. in Kalamazoo. It is primarily a
clinical laboratory, receiving patient specimens from hospitals
and' doctors across the country, most often for determination
of serum estradiol or parathyroid hormone levels, although
they are also doing a study on androstenedione and testosterone.
Consequently I was exposed to most aspects of a medical
laboratory except for patient contact, however most of my time
was spent learning the assays themselves. This paper is
essentially a summary of my experience with radioimmunoassays
as performed in a clinical laboratory.
