Abstract
Alkane/water partition coefficients have been predicted from the retention times of solutes, of both small and large molecular weights, using a C-18 derivatized polystyrene-divinylbenzene HPLC column (Act-I). π coefficients have been calculated and compared to literature values. The π coefficients for larger molecular weight compounds are similar to those of smaller compounds. Thus the retention mechanisms are similar for large and small compounds even though this system underestimates log PC's for larger compounds. The thermodynamics of the Act-l column were also studied. High correlation coefficients (0.988 or higher) were obtained for plots of log k' versus l/T (K). Deviations of calculated alkane/water partition coefficients from observed values seem to depend upon molecular weight, suggesting that special interaction between the solute and stationary phase are significant.
