Abstract
This essay deals with the factors which have culminated in Berlin's present division as well as the repercussions this division has had on West Berlin. It investigates the affects of West Berlin's isolation and enclosure. West Berlin has been transformed into an isolated and dependent entity. The previous political and industrial capital of Germany has been turned, in some respects, into an impotent metropolis. During the Cold War Berlin was the center of world attention, but now, in a secure yet unique situation, it must return to the problems of everyday life, and deal with the complicated problems which have ensued from its unique political status. This city must learn to adapt to its situation in order for everyday life to continue normally. In many respects Berlin is handicapped. It must now rely on the economic, social and political support of benevolent governmental administrations.
