    Abstract
While studying at Fourah Bay College, Freetown, Sierra Leone, I first heard of the Maroons and their place in the history of that country. Upon returning to Kalamazoo, my interest in anthropology developed and led me to explore the field of cultural transmissions. Maintaining a desire to undertake academic work in this field, and simultaneously, to learn more about Africa and its influences in the new World, I decided to examine more closely the Jamaican Maroons. Thus my work took me to the Caribbean in order to use the facilities of the Jamaican Institute and to do field work among the Maroons.
