Abstract
Little has been done on Julian of Norwich, save commentaries on her writings and conjecture about Julian the person. A comprehensive study, examining many of
the problems and possibilities of her as a figure worthy of study, has seemingly never been done. While an exhaustive study and commentary on her and her writings would take into account philosophical and theological argument, the following pages are devoted to as thorough a study as is possible, given the limited amount of resource
material available. It is an attempt to draw together as much as may be known now, either by fact or conjecture, of Julian the person, authoress, and mystic. In so doing it is hoped that one might come to understand and appreciate Julian of Norwioh as an historical figure, and more specifically as a reaction to the period of crisis in which she lived. In so doing perhaps one will come to better understand the statement,that some have said of her, that she is "in qualities of mind and heart, one of the most remarkable,
perhaps the most remarkable Englishwoman of her age."
