Portugese Colonial Policy: The Factors Influencing It, the Supporters, and the Critics

My interest in Portugal began when I studied Portuguese language in high school. At that time I was only vaguely aware of Portugal's vast territorial holdings. More recently I studied Angola in an African politics course. Through the course I came to realize that the Portuguese concept of colonial empire is unique. It is, in fact, difficult for non-Portuguese to understand. I was intrigued by the uniqueness, and the paper that follows is an attempt to discover some purely Portuguese factors that contributed to it.
