    Abstract
The original idea of writing children's historical fiction came from my Senior Individualized Project advisor, Bill Pruitt. The specific topic of my book, the story of the Mende chief, Kailundu, came from a lecture which Professor Kenneth C. Wylie gave in the Kalamazoo College African Studies Lecture Series during the summer of 1969. Mr. Wylie is a history professor at Wayne State University in Detroit. Mr. Wylie granted me a personal interview and provided me with invaluable information and guidance.
