Abstract
Fundamental to an understanding of the Middle East is an understanding of the regime of President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt from 1952-1970. It is of particular importance to understand the role of Arab nationalism and Arab socialism as these concepts were defined in Nasser's regime and produced an effect on the Middle East which endures today. Nasser motivated not only Egyptians with his advocation of Arab nationalism and Arab socialism, but also the masses of the entire Arab world. For Nasser's regime, Arab nationalism and Arab socialism were all-encompassing ideologies more than policies. These two ideas, which shall be called Nasser's ideology, provided a popular and comprehensive ideology through which Egyptians could understand Nasser's policies and the world.
