Abstract
This paper concerns the Franciscan Missionaries in the New World, especially in Alta California, and is divided into three parts: the History of the Franciscan Order; the History of the California Missions, and the Franciscans in California, including outstanding friars and the Franciscan achievements. The paper is not intended as Franciscan recruiting literature, for the writer understands that many other religious groups have accomplished outstanding feats in their missionary work. Neither does the paper focus on the history of a particular mission, for many such texts have already been written. Rather, the author hopes to demonstrate a correlation between the character, teachings, and goals of St. Francis and his followers in thirteenth century Europe, and the labors and achievements of the Franciscan Missionaries in eighteenth and nineteenth century America.
