Abstract
This paper is the study of the development of an idea, a chronological study of the image of the German Kaiser as it was presented in the editorial columns of the New York Times from 1913 - 1917. This time period was chosen to include the Kaiser's image as it existed both before and during the First World War. During that time span (1913 - 1917), leaders in the Legislative and Executive branches of the American Government considered the Times to be an important shaper of public opinion, a generator at ideas which influenced American society. However, this S.I.P. is not a study of the influence of the paper on American opinion, but rather the study of how one idea (the image of the German Emperor) was perceived and expressed by one specific group of Americans (the editorial writers of the Times) .during the neutrality preceding the First World War.
