Imperialism, colonization and decolonization had a tremendous impact on the colonizers as well as the colonized. The process exacerbated the instability of the metropole. Implicit in the concept of imperialism is a contradiction of both nationhood and the governmental structure of' a liberal democratic republic. Numerous questions are then raised as to the future of imperialist nations. Can they redefine their policies and establish a type of imperialism that is not in contradiction with nationhood and republicanism? Examination of these questions led to an examination of the relationship between Algeria and France. The relationship is an extreme case of colonialism and therefore presents the best example of the results of colonialism. Both countries are uniquely interesting as individual nations.
