Abstract
This work seeks to examine the development of historical thinking about Richard III. From the chroniclers who were contemporaries of Richard's to modern-day historians, the historical opinion of each century is discussed. Not every biography of Richard or narrative of his reign could be examined, but those works have been chosen which are most representative of their era. Each work is investigated and evaluated as a piece of historical scholarship. The arguments are analyzed and the evidence on which they rest is inspected. The purpose throughout has been to give a critical evaluation of the historical judgments of past writers in hopes that the reader may in this way reach a better understanding of the controversy surrounding Richard III and thus of Richard himself.
