I intend to examine the failures of the photographers and the institutions, and show how these earlier errors hamper researchers who wish to use Civil War photographs as a resource. I will briefly outline new methods of preservation and finally proceed to suggest a better way for institutions to store and retrieve Civil War photographs, namely the "Civil War Checklist" system which I have been preparing at the Chicago Historical Society.en_US
