dc.description.abstractWhat is history? Is there any value in studying history? How is history written? These are all difficult yet fundamental questions for any student of history to answer because if history has no value we must expend our energies in some other discipline. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the above questions in an attempt to justify the study of history . I did all of my thinking and writing without having consulted any other sources. Then, feeling somewhat frustrated with my work, I examined several books which dealt with the philosophy of history. This paper is a revision of my original work; my ideas remain basically untouched, but I have included some references to the works I consulted. The last section of the paper stems from the job I had fall quarter as a teacher at a small private school in Oregon. At that time I was involved with developing an individualized history curriculum for junior high and high school students. The result was the general outline of an American government course which was to be a prerequisite to the American history course. A copy of that check-sheet together with a discussion of how we arrived at it is included.en_US
