Gold Rush San Francisco: Creation and Transformation of a City

I have always been interested in the history of the West, being from there myself, and it was with this in mind that I started researching topics for my SIP. After reading a particularly wonderful book by Julie Roy Jeffrey, Frontier Women, I wanted to know more and I thought I had found my topic - looking at the history of women settling in the west and the roles they played there. Part of my research led me to look at prostitution in the west, and I found that this was particularly concentrated in one city, San Francisco. I was immediately struck by these women and particularly this unique city that, in all of its vice and disorder, made for quite a fascinating study. My SIP abruptly changed focus, as I began studying the city's history and discovered how quickly the city transformed from a wild, frontier city to someplace more civilized. I think this is one of the most interesting periods in history that I have come across, so I hope I convey some of that in my paper.
