Abstract
This is not a paper written with the intent of clarifying, explaining, illuminating, reordering, reconstructing, simplifying or uncovering facts. Other historians with legitimate claim to the title have already made better efforts in these directions than I ever could. Rather, the intent of this paper is to represent the past as I see it; I have looked, to the best of my ability, at the past and this is my interpretation of it. Any clarity, explanation, subsequent illumination or reconstruction is purely incidental. I have made a career here at Kalamazoo College by studying the past and these studies have propelled me, rear end first, through four years of education. This paper is the culmination of my historical career, and as such, it - and all of its failings and imperfections - is mine and mine alone.
