This project has consumed me for the past four months. The topic, Cold War immigration and anticommunist legislation, has interested me ever since I wrote a lengthy paper on the American Legion's role in postwar politics for Dr. Strauss' class last spring. While flipping through old issues of The American Legion Magazine:> I realized that the issue of Americanism is at the root of all domestic Cold War culture. What does it mean to be a "real American?" Are those traits typically referred to as "American" reserved exclusively for native-born Americans?
