The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) began in 1943 and lasted until 1954. It was important for two reasons. The first reason is the unique spirit the women of the AAGPBL brought to the game. The second reason is because the players in the AAGPBL were pioneers in women's sports. In 1943, life in the US was undergoing drastic changes because of World War II. The war effort was causing shortages in many aspects of everyday life. One of the main shortages was manpower, due to the large number of males who both enlisted and were drafted into the army to fight overseas.
