I first realized that this project was life consuming when I went to downtown Chicago and no longer saw Grant Park, the comer of Michigan Avenue and Balbo, or Lincoln Park in their current forms. Instead, I saw the places in their historical context. Grant Park was no longer where I watched movies during the summer, but was where the police busted Rennie Davis's head. Lincoln Park was no longer a nice park, but a place where people were beaten when they tried to spend the night. The comer of Michigan and Balbo was not just another streetlight, but it was now a battleground. The first time that I realized that, I realized how much of an impact this project has had on my life. In the past nine months that I have worked on this project it has taken on a life of its own. It started out as a project on Chicago mayor, Richard J. Daley, and turned into a study on the violence that occurred during the 1968 Democratic Convention. This project has taught me patience and perseverance. I also have a much greater respect for professional historians who spend years, not months, researching and writing a project.en_US
