A Test-System for Automotive-Type Reactive Mufflers

As the modern world became mechanized, the associated noise pollution was largely ignored, until recently. New interest in noise control and environmental protection has pinpointed the internal combustion engine as a prime noise polluter. It is therefore appropriate that muffler design and theory become suitable subjects for the college and graduate engineering student. But a search of the literature reveals no applicable lecture demonstration or basic laboratory experiments in this field. The project described herein attempted to fill the void with a muffler test-system and model mufflers. 1) The possible number of variables is reduced by
