dc.description.abstractThis study examined the Knoop hardness measurements of SMARTPREP (SP) instruments as well as dentin at the cavity floor. The instruments were measured at the tip of the bur in the axial and cross-sectional positions. The SP instruments were used to remove carious tooth decay from extracted human third molars. Some of the tooth sections were built up with DTX and composite material, while the others were not built up and remained the control. Eight sections with DTX and four without were placed in the incubator for one day, while 18 sections were placed in the incubator for ten days, all containing the bioactive base. Knoop hardness measurements were then made near the edge of the cavity/outline. After running a statistical test, superANOVA, no significant difference was discovered between the tooth sections that did or did not have re-mineralized material added to them. However, the results showed a gradual increase in hardness, for the re-mineralized dentin, going further away from the cavity along a line. The mean KH values were too scattered for significant increase in the non re-mineralized dentin tissue. The KH values for the SP instruments generated from this study differed greatly from those that were provided by the SS WHITE Corporation (SMARTPREP INSTRUMENTS, 2003).en_US
