Abstract
The rush for inclusion in the public school system has caused many controversies and
conflicting beliefs and practices over the recent years. Over the 1999-00 school year, I
was given the opportunity to learn and teach in two separate school systems. Both of
these schools practiced inclusion, but at varying degrees.
I spent my pre-internship experience at South Middle School, located in Kalamazoo, MI,
and my internship at Berkley High School, located in Berkley, MI, a suburb of Detroit.
In both schools I was given the opportunity to work with and teach students with mental
and physical handicaps. I was therefore able to research the practices of inclusion that
took place in both of these districts.
This SIP is an overview of inclusion, a look into different practices and an insight into
two separate and very different School Systems. It must be remembered that with this
recent "rush" for inclusion districts need to think long and hard about how they are going
to meet the needs of the students so that they are given the opportunity to grow socially,
mentally and emotionally.
