    Abstract
The long-term goal of the ultrasonic periodontal project is to create a non-invasive probe, which can accurately monitor gum disease. The project blends the scientific fields of biology, physics and engineering, in an attempt to resolve gum disease. The presence of gum disease causes a deterioration of connective tissue resulting in a deep periodontal pocket. The probe uses ultrasonic frequencies to penetrate the gum line and receive a signal return from the bottom of the periodontal pocket. This approach will allow periodontists to determine if the pocket depth is within the healthy range of 0.5 to 3 mm.
