Abstract
Four antitumor antibiotics were tested with calf thymus DNA type I, both in combination and when complexed to this macromolecule in BDF/l mice tumored with P388 lymphocytic leukemia. The antitumor activity of actinomycin D or adriamycin was potentiated when DNA was given one-half hour after administration of the drug, as well as when the antibiotic and DNA were given as a complex. No potentiation of antitumor activity of menogarol (7-0MEN) was seen in combination or when complexed with DNA. The activity of CC-l065 was potentiated slightly and a dramatic reduction in toxicity attributed to the drug itself was observed when this antibiotic was given in combination with DNA at the optimal dose of 0.04 mg/kg. Evidence of toxicity was absent when CC-l065 and DNA were complexed with one another.
