Cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP are generally regarded as second messengers in neural synaptic transmission. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the effects of ethanol on these cyclic nucleotides as a function of time. Male mice were randomly divided into two groups and administered either 10% ethanol or isotonic saline. Animals were sacrificed at time intervals of one, three, five, and ten minutes after injection by means of microwave irradiation. The neural activity, represented by cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP, was measured in twelve brain regions by the method of double antibody radioimmunoassay.
