dc.description.abstractPseudorabies virus (PRV) is anΑα-herpesvirus and molecularly similar to Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). The virus may lethally infect all mammals with the exception of the higher primates. Although susceptible to infection, adult hogs are able to survive infection by the virus and in these instances the virus becomes latent. This results in million dollar losses annually to the swine industry, because hogs cannot be sold if they are or have been infected or if the herd to which it belongs is quarantined. Viral glycoproteins are found on the surface of infected cells and virions. These glycoproteins, produced as a result of the virus, are important, for it is the glycosylated protein that is able to elicit a strong immune response after infection. High C, a glycoprotein found on the virion surface of cells infected by PRV, was found through passive immunizations to have a neutralizing effect, that is, it reduces the possibility of infection by PRV. The processing of High C from the nucleus to the cell membrane has been characterized. High C was found to contain both N-linked and O-linked glycosylation. It was also shown that the epitope for the monoclonal antibody 7D-ll is on the protein backbone of High C.en_US
