A Taxonomic Characterization of the Porifera of Fisherman's Cove in Santa Catalina Island through Photomicrography and Analysis of the Skeletal Components
MetadataShow full item record
A taxonomic study of the phylum Porifera was conducted at Fisherman's Cove from January to March of 1984. The differentiation of sponge species was based on their individual skeletal elements. Through photomicrography and analysis of constituents, each species collected in the cove area was identified and catalogued. Thirteen species of Porifera were found in relative abundance, as follows: Axinella mexicana, Cyamon neon, Haliclona cinerea, Haliclona ecbasis, Halisorca species, Lissodenoryx firma, Ophlitaspongia pennata, Penares cortius, Plocamia igzo, Tethya aurantia, and Verongia aurea. Two calcareous species were also common to the area, Clathrina blanca and Leucetta losangelensis.
