A Study of the Length-Frequency Method and the Use of Fish Populations as Indicators of Inland Lake Eutrophication
The condition of Gull Lake plus the fact that the Kellogg Biological Station of Michigan State University is located on its shores, made it an ideal opportunity for a project. The purposes of the project were manyfold. Certainly, the primary goal was to aid the Stations study of the lake which as of Fall 1911, had not as yet included an extensive fish population study. This project was meant to at least set the groundwork for such a study. The time limit on this project as well as the physical conditions on the lake at the time of study were serious limiting factors. A second purpose kept in mind during this study was an examination of some of the relationships between some of the fish species studied as well as their relationship to the factors of the lake itself. These relationships could probably be considered to be typical of a freshwater environment. The superficiality of the study prevented the examination of many of these relationships in any detail but many were indeed brought out in the course of this study. Finally. the last major purpose in mind was the gathering of experience. Through this study,much was learned about collecting and survey techniques as well as the processing of data and graphing.
