Carbon Dioxide Trapping as a Method to Determine the Relationship of Insect Activity to Climatic Conditions

A specific method for this experiment was employed so that the activity of specific insects could be studied in reference to climatic conditions. The following described trapping apparatus was baited with dry ice, the carbon dioxide attracting three major orders of insects - Homoptera, Diptera, and Hymenoptera - with a considerable variety of species in the latter two orders. Attracted in small numbers were spiders and other occasional insects of the orders Lepidoptera and Coleoptera. The insects were collected at specific intervals (2 to 3 days), counted, identified, and graphically presented with the ambient climatic conditions of temperature, precipitation, and barometric pressure. Correlation of these variables provided information pertaining to seasonal activity of Diptera and Hymenoptera. This material thus furnished evidence of specific seasonal activity of insects as related to climatic conditions.
