Abstract
This summer 64 Sea Otters (Enhydra lutris) were transplanted to the southern Oregon coast. Forty-one were released at Cape Arago, south of Coos Bay, and 29 at Port Orford. The transplant began badly when, due to bad weather, the otters had to be dumped directly into the ocean instead of put into holding pens where they could have rested, preened, and eaten. After the release on June 24, I helped look for the otters in an attempt to discover how many survived and how they dispersed. By September 21, five Sea Otters were known dead. Five were known living at Simpson's Reef, and, though no other live ones were known, some others may have been living in other areas along the coast.
