Abstract
Although this investigation of selective cardiac hypothermia was confined to the library, its origins are in clinical cardiac surgery. During my three months of' career-Service and a part of the three months of my Senior Independent Project, i worked with Dr. John N. Wilson and Dr. Edward Gerety, cardio-vascular surgeons in Albuquerque, New Mexico., It was through working with them that i came into contact with selective cardiac hypothermia. Doctors Wilson and Gerety had occasion to apply the technique many times and in several different in intracardiac surgical procedures. I was repeatedly astonished by its effectiveness in preserving the human myocardiun during periods of ischemia as long as two hours and twenty minutes. My curiosity as to the mechanism of the extraordinary protection-afforded by hypothermia seemed to make a study of the technique appropriate.
