dc.description.abstractIn our experiments a new assay to measure the rate of phagocytosis was developed. We found this assay simple, accurate, inexpensive, and readily reproducible when compared to previous studies done on phagocytosis. In this assay, an emulsion of paraffin oil was used as the source of particles added to the cells. The paraffin oil was saturated by an Oil Red 0 dye which allowed the cells to be extracted in dioxane and spectrophotometrically read. The techniques of this assay also made it possible to change particle surfaces, and therefore, compare the effect of various particle surfaces on phagocytosis. The effect of pharmacological agents on the activity of phagocytic cells was measured and oompared to previous research. The results indicate that this approach to the problem yields a valid assay of the rate of particle ingestion.en_US
