Abstract
R factors were segregated into minicells of R+ Escherichia coli minicell-producing strains. In this study, was demonstrated the ability of these R factors to transfer themselves from minicells into normal cells and express an antibiotic marker of the donor in the recombinant by conjugation. Minicells were harvested as well as cells from the first differential centrifugation (original cells) and from the cell pellets of two sucrose gradients (sucrose cells). It was found that transfer of the R factor from minicell to normal cell was as efficient as normal cell-to-cell transfer and that both the requirements for and the kinetics of transfer may be very similar to those of normal cells.
