Contrasting Traditional vs. Reformed Teaching Methods of Mathematics: A Look at Two Curricula

What method of instruction is most effective for teaching mathematics at the high school level? As a future teacher this is an important question that led me to the investigation of two math curricula: the University of Chicago School of Mathematics Project (UCSMP) and Core-Plus Mathematics Project (CPMP). Each of these programs presents a different philosophy as well as a different approach to instruction in the classroom. Through my investigation and research I have found each program to offer different strengths and weaknesses that must be considered in choosing a secondary mathematics curriculum.
