Lisa: A Case Study of an At-Risk Student

In the United States, we are confronted with the fact that not all students get a good education in our public schools. We see statistics and personal accounts of students falling through the cracks in the schools. These students with serious problems sneak through the system without being identified and treated as a student "at-risk." Yet, what if the crack a particular student is falling through is a canyon? What if the student is not only falling, but diving into this chasm of scholastic failure with reckless abandon without any support from her home? What is the role of the teacher in this situation? During my student teaching at Portage Northern High School, I was presented with queries such as these because of a particular student in two of my classes. Before addressing the particular issues surrounding this student, I will provide background information on the school and the personnel that were involved in this situation
