The Kalamazoo College teacher preparation program is one in which students learn theories, study research. and practice strategies as part of the total curriculum. All of these elements are incorporated into the final requirement of student teaching. This valuable experience proved to be a deciding factor in my career choice. During the time I was teaching, I utilized my knowledge from education courses, previous experiences, and personal motivation to create interesting lessons and handle practical situations. I was faced with challenges each day that added to my practical experience and it was ultimately very rewarding to observe students' personal and academic growth. Before I began teaching, I hoped this opportunity would confirm my decision to pursue a career as an educator. Indeed. this experience increased my self esteem as a competent teacher, enhanced my organizational skills. promoted my natural tendencies to work with young people. and made me realize that I am comfortable in front of a class and could definitely be in that situation on a daily basis. At times I was fr:ustrated by a failed lesson or an uncooperative student, but on the majority of days I was excited to hear a student's poem and took pride in knowing I taught something new about authors and poetry. After being a student for nearly 18 years. it was a very different feeling to be on the other side of the desk. The student teaching experience forced me to mature as an individual and to develop my role as a teacher through reflection of and consideration for situations from this new perspective.
