A Student Teaching Internship at Saginaw High
My study abroad experience was so monumental in my life that I wanted to encourage others to share in such a rich and fulfilling experience. I have always thought that I would enjoy teaching but I never realized how much fun it could be until I met my students at Saginaw High School. The very first day I began teaching the class independently, they looked at me as if I was from another planet. As a student, I understood the panic they felt. As a teacher, I saw that sudden panic of not understanding attack my entire class. Our worlds collided that first day but it took that little bump to enrich their lives as well as my own. Ten weeks later I saw those same students bring panic to their friends in the hallways using the little French that they were proud to know. I've always felt that learning a foreign language was important but I didn't learn or understand all of the benefits until I was teaching it. Studying different languages is not just about learning how to read, write, and speak. Like our own education in English we learn many different things while using our traditional subjects as vessels to the unknown. Foreign language education teaches our students to "think". They learn to develop better study habits and become problem solvers because every day is a puzzle. Another side to learning a foreign language that improves our lives is the awareness that they form about another country. They become sensitive to people·who are different from themselves. They learn about cultures that are not necessarily the "American Way". They appreciate the things that make us different or unique without criticizing those who live different life styles. I learned many thing this fall through teaching and because of what my students taught me. Their growth influenced me to never give up on them as individuals and people. They are capable of so much if we believe in them. I truly believe that if our society is going to improve in the future and advance we need to start emphasizing the importance of learning a foreign language today so that we will be prepared for tomorrow. Through this education we will not only understand others throughout the world but we will have a better understanding of ourselves.
