Abstract
After examining the importance and history of grammar study in high schools, the author reviews common techniques and theories associated with the teaching of grammar, such as sentence diagramming, repetition, and integration. Personal experiences from intern teaching at an urban high school supplement and explore the methods researched. From this experience, many aspects of teaching grammar are brought up, such as students' lack of desire to learn Standard English. Finally, a conclusion discussing the merits and drawbacks of certain techniques finds that some methods allow for more students to understand and want to learn Standard English.
