Within the education community, there are several debates surrounding the use of technology. One of those debates is whether or not to allow for the use of calculators in the math classroom. This debate will be introduced through a discussion of math anxiety, which affects students around the country. While attempting to prevent math anxiety, this paper discusses the benefits and draw-backs to calculators as a solution to this problem. Research shows that calculators can be viewed as a useful learning aid for mathematics students. However, while it may provide them with a source of relief, calculators can also be a crutch that can actually weaken students' skills. This study will attempt to find a balance between the use of technology and the assurance of students' conceptual understanding of mathematics.
