Thalamocortical Projections to Somatic Sensory Cortex in Tupaia Glis

This study is an examination of thalamocortical connectivity to the somatic cortical field in the tree shrew, Tupaia glis. The enzymatic marker horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected into the somatic sensory cortex to· trace the afferent nerves projecting from the thalamus. The principle finding reported here is that. this somatic region has the same basic "core-belt" organizational scheme previously demonstrated for visual and auditory cortical areas. The principal constituent of the sensory "core" is area 3b, which receives its main thalamic input from the.ventral posterior nucleus.. The sensory regions anterior and posterior to area 3b are the "belt" areas and receive afferents from multiple thalamic nuclei.
