Significant morphological variation has been noted for Viola pedatifida (Prairie birdsfoot violet) over much of its range in the Midwest. No previous studies have been undertaken to examine this wide variation. Leaf and flower collections were made at a number of western Michigan locations, and certain characters measured from these collections for analysis. The evidence obtained from an analysis of the data strongly indicates that hybridization is an important factor in the variability represented in the populations sampled. The relationship of the apparent hybrids with the taxon known as the "Great Lakes" form of Viola palmata is discussed.
