Viability and Parental Influence Studies on the Seeds of Two Aureolaria (False Foxglove) Species and Their Artificial Crosses

Two species of plants in the genus Aureolaria (False Foxglove) have been encountered under conditions favorable for hybridization and/or introgression. A study was set up to investigate these possibilities. lnitial studies indicated that the two species, A. flava and A. pedicularis, appeared to be receptive to each other's pollen and apparently viable seeds were formed. This study reports results from viability and germination studies on the artificial crosses of these species as well as statistical analysis of the mean number of seeds per capsule, mean seed size, and mean seed weight. The results indicate that it is possible to hybridize A.flava females with A. pedicularis males artificially but that the reciprocal cross (A. pedicularis females crossed with A.flava males) is not viable. The hybrids show the same tendencies as their maternal parental types for seed size and weight and a correlation appears to exist between seed weight and viability.
