dc.description.abstractExtracellular annelid hemoglobins are among the largest known oxygen carriers, with reported molecular masses in the range of 2.4 to 3.8 x 10 6. Extensive studies have been executed on these molecules, especially regarding their dissociation in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Earlier studies have indicated an iron content ranging between 0.2 and 0.25% in the extracellular hemoglobins studied. The determination of iron in these molecules can provide important answers to questions about the structure and function of extracellular annelid hemoglobins. Previously, the dye 1,l0-phenanthroline was used in determining iron content in hemoglobin, however, its low sensitivity requires relatively large amounts of material. This project traces the development of a procedure for the determination of iron content using the dye 4-(2-pyridylazo) resorcinol (PAR), whose sensitivity is five times that of 1,10-phenanthroline.en_US
