January 1980 was the official end of the construction of the new rock mole-pier complex at Catalina Marine Science Center, Santa Catalina Island, California. As part of the construction permit and as partial mitigation of the covering of the cove's soft bottom with rocks, the center proposed to document the biological activity occurring on the rocks. The purpose of this study was to construct a species list of the plants and animals present on the rock mole. In addition the amount of sedimentation occurring around the structure was measured. This study will serve as a baseline for future studies and the corresponding semi-annual reports that will be submitted to the National Marine Fisheries and the California Department of Fish and Game.
