Abstract
American secondary education is one of the most significant institutions in developing
attitudes, interests, and ideas for adolescents. Affecting people during an impressionable yet individualistic period, high school is a time of curiosity, enthusiasm, and quests for autonomy, all of which teachers must manage and monitor. Although I have been intrigued
by what students are learning and how it is being taught, I had not yet been assured that
teaching secondary education was my calling. Student teaching was my opportunity to
discover whether or not I enjoyed the elements of teaching that I had anticipated and to
recognize those of which I was not aware. Kalamazoo Central High School was the perfect
location for me to analyze the working of a school including a diverse body of students and
politics among the staff, to discover the responsibilities of teachers, to practice my teaching
skills, and to focus upon and evaluate an individual student.
