Abstract
Teaching is a field that relies on a varied background in the teacher. A teacher must be competent not only in major and minor areas of study but also in psychology, sociology and specific educational theory. Even still events in the classroom will occur that are not discussed in teacher preparation. Learning to cope with these surprises is necessary for becoming a good teacher. One minor surprise is that the middle school is unique because the non-academic strongly affects the academic according to most middle school teachers. Behavior and academic problems accompany each other frequently. Dan is an example of a student whose academic problems are consequential of his behavior and emotional problems. I observed Dan for approximately eleven weeks during my student teaching. Over a period of time, behavior can change permanently. Although Dan's behavior progressed, it reflected a day to day change in his emotional state.
