Abstract
Ascorbate has been found in very high concentration in chromaffin cells and secretory vesicles of the adrenal medulla. It was hypothesized that this ascorbate may be secreted concomitantly with catecholamines. Three (3) day old cultured bovine chromaffin cells were prelabelled with 14C - ascorbate for several hours and induced to release with veratradine. It was found that approximately 30% of the label was secreted upon veratradine stimulation and that such secretion was inhibited by tetrodotoxin. Secretion was not, however, inhibited by isethionate or absence of calcium. This data is taken to indicate that ascorbic acid is released from chromaffin cells and that this release is primarily cytoplasmic.
